Using a Thesaurus

A thesaurus is a book that lists synonyms for words.  Synonyms are two or more words that have the same meaning.  For example, “big” and “large” are synonyms.

You will be using a thesaurus (the book) and an online thesaurus for your next task.

1.  In your folders you will find the words to the song, Row, Row, Row Your Boat, as well as the words to some well-known nursery rhymes.   Your group will use the thesaurus to write new words for the song or one of the nursery rhymes.  2.  Go the the “research” link on Central Library’s Webpage and choose the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia.   Under the search box, click on “Dictionaries”.  There are several choices on this page.  Select Roget’s II: The New Thesaurus (Third Edition) and begin searching for synonyms for the  song lyrics. 3.  You may open up a WORD document into which you can type your new lyrics as you look up the words in the thesaurus, or you may type the new lyrics after you have looked up all of the words.4. After writing your new song lyrics in a WORD document, you should save them in the library file on the userfile.  You need to show them to Mrs. Corsetti before they may be uploaded!

5.  Once your lyrics have been approved, you will upload them to the wiki page for your class.  We will do this together as a class before you upload your own lyrics.  Click on the link to go to the wiki: Reader2Reader Wiki.  From the table of contents on the home page, click on the link to go to your class’s page and follow the directions there.  Remember, the directions for “editing” a wiki page are on the same paper as the words to Row, Row, Row Your Boat.

6.  When all of the groups have finished, each group will perform its new version of the song.

7.  If you finish early, read the next blog post.

February’s Assignment

*****Before You Begin*****Leave this blog open but minimized and open a second Internet Explorer window to use for completing the asssignment.  This way you can refer back to the directions in the blog to be certain that you have followed all of the directions.Recently, in the classroom, you chose a person to study for Black History Month.  For your first blog assignment, you will complete a small project about the same person.  You will be working with a partner so you need to help each other find information and complete both of your projects.1.  Get your folder from the box for your class.  Inside will be a graphic organizer.2. Use the "Research" link from the library Web page to go to the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia.  There you and your partner will look for information about the two people you read about.  (Hint: Which is the important name to look up: a person's first name or last name?.) 3.  Fill in the information on the graphic organizer.  For the last section of the organizer, use the following sites: Quoteland or The Quotations Page4.  When your organizer is complete, click on this link: http://www.readwritethink.org/materials/bio_cube/ to create a Bio-Cube of the person you selected.  Fill in the information for the Bio-Cube from your graphic organizer.

5.  When you finish entering the information, proofread all of your work and then print your Bio-Cube.

6.  Then put your organizer and the printed Bio-Cube into your folder and move your folder to the “Done” box.

***** It may take 2 library classes to finish this project.***

If you and your partner finish, you may look for a book and check out. Afterwards, you may

sit at the round tables reading quietly
offer to help someone else on your team
or visit the fourth grade book blurbs site (click on the site name under “Links” - right) to read someone’s post and leave a comment.

Hello Central Students!

Welcome to Reader2Reader. This is a place where I will post library assignments and projects.  I will create separate posts for each month’s project.  Just read this month’s assignment and follow the directions.

Good luck!
